Before starting a portal, marketplace or directory you must choose a foundation. Each option has real advantages. The right one depends on your budget, timeline and how much control you need.

When SaaS makes sense
SaaS is great to validate an idea in days, with no technical skills. The trade-offs are monthly fees that scale with your success, limited customization and dependence on the vendor's roadmap and pricing.
When WordPress makes sense
WordPress is excellent for content sites. For listing-heavy platforms (directories, job boards, marketplaces) you quickly stack several plugins, each with its own update schedule, licensing and security surface. It works, but can become fragile and slow.
When a PHP script makes sense
A purpose-built script such as ATN Jobs or ATN Business Directory is designed around one business model. You get the features, an admin panel and data structure designed for the job, you host it where you want and keep 100% of your revenue. With unencrypted source code, a developer can change anything.
When to build custom
Only when your product has requirements that no existing software can meet, and you have budget and time. A smart middle route: start with a script and customize it. Our customization service exists for this.
Decision checklist
- Will fees per month or per transaction hurt your margins at scale?
- Do you need custom fields, workflows or integrations?
- Do you want to move hosts without losing your data?
- Do you have someone who can follow a simple installation guide, or do you want it installed for you?
If most answers point to control and cost, a script is probably the best fit. Our guide on installing a PHP script on cPanel shows how simple it is.
